Kashmir craft to adorn Mumbai International Airport

Srinagar: In a major boost to its handicraft industry, traditional craft works of Kashmir will soon adorn the new terminal of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. The state-of-the-art terminal-2 which is all set to open in September has an area of over 4,39,000 square meters.
To make it look like a modern day living museum, the GVK— considered to be India's largest infrastructure developers— has decided to adorn the interiors of T2 with Kashmir handicraft work.
To this end, a 6800 sft mural— a piece of artwork laced with traditional Kashmiri crafts including Khatamband, Pinjarakari and woodwork, paper mache—  has been made with the help of prominent artists of Srinagar and Baroda, here.
Before being sent to Mumbai for adorning the T2, the mural will be unveiled by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during an exhibition on May 31 here, officials said.
The idea to make the mural was planned and given a practical shape by prominent artists of contemporary art Nilimi Sheikh and BV Suresh.
“The mural is not only about crafts of Kashmir but also its cultural antecedents. It gives a panorama of traditional crafts which have deep cultural moorings,” Nilima told Greater Kashmir.
Nilima said Rajeev Sethi, Scenographer for the Mumbai International Airport Terminal-2, was instrumental in floating the idea of making the mural.
