Mushrooming meat shops give rise to bird-hits

Mumbai: With an alarming number of meat shops cropping up near the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), the number of bird-hits being reported has gone up again.
As per the latest statistics available with Airport Authority of India, 14 bird hits were recorded at the airport in 2012. In comparison, there were 12 cases of bird hits in 2010, which came down to 10 in 2011. The highest number in recent years was recorded in 2009, with 15 instances of bird-hits.
According to an estimate, the Indian aviation industry loses over Rs20 crore annually due to bird hits.
