Power cut leaves fliers stranded at airport

Kolkata: On Tuesday afternoon, passengers flying into Kolkata could not fathom what was wrong at the terminal. It was only after a prolonged wait at the baggage carousals that some realized the lights were out. A few Still others noticed that the air-conditioning system wasn't functioning. But for those bewildering 30-40 minutes, there was no attempt by airlines to inform passengers what was wrong.
The terminal went on the blink around 2pm as power supply to the facility tripped, shutting down air-conditioning, elevators, escalators, check-in counters, X-ray machines and luggage conveyor belts. This immediately halted all operations - check in, security check and baggage claim.
"A CESC supply disruption affected operations briefly. The power supply was restored in 10 minutes," said airport director BP Sharma. Though the lights returned in 10 minutes and the air-conditioning thereafter.
