Probe initiated into diamond theft case

Mumbai: Sahar police have initiated a probe into the disappearance of a packet of diamonds worth Rs 3.91 crore, which allegedly went missing during transit to Belgium earlier this week.
The complainant is an employee with a diamond trading firm based in the city. On May 16, the complainant sent a consignment containing 24 packets of diamonds to a firm based in Belgium by air cargo. A representative of the Belgium-based firm was to receive it at the airport and confirm the delivery. "The Belgium-based firm got back to the complainant saying the consignment was one packet short of what was decided to be sent. The complainant then approached us and we registered a complaint of theft on May 17," a senior inspector with Sahar police station said.
Police are now conducting inquiries with the loaders in the cargo area of the airport, and courier company employees who visit the cargo area to pick their consignments, police said.
