Mumbai: The air intelligence unit (AIU) arrested a South African event manager on Friday for attempting to smuggle out 26 kg of drugs worth Rs 13 crore through Mumbai airport.
The passenger, Cicee Linten (36), was on her way to Maputo, Mozambique. Around 5.30am, Linten checked in at the Ethiopian Airlines counter at Mumbai airport. The AIU had received a tip-off that an African woman would attempt to smuggle out drugs. As Linten's profile matched the description of the suspected smuggler, an AIU team, led by assistant commissioner Sameer Wankhede, asked her to step aside for a personal check. Officials opened her bag and found around 580 bobbins. They took threads off the bobbins and discovered that about 50 gm of methaqualone was wrapped on each bobbin. ," said a senior customs official. The drug was neatly wrapped in plastic covers and wrapped around the bobbins. The tread was spooled around the bobbins after that.
