Bhagalpur: Decks are being cleared to bring Bhagalpur-- one of the oldest divisions in Bihar -- in the air map with Skyfisher Airways all set to launch an air service under its 'Air-Auto' sector on regional routes in a few weeks. With this, commercial operation from the Bhagalpur airfield, which was constructed in 1973, would resume after 35 years.
Sources said the Directorate of Civil Aviation, cabinet secretariat department, government of Bihar, has already sanctioned Rs 1.33 crore for the repair and black-carpeting of the airstrip besides restoration of boundary walls of the airfield. Sources said work is currently underway to make the airfield operational by the first week of July.
Skyfisher Airways -- a private air-services provider -- has proposed to start air service in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh sector connecting Patna, Varanasi and Gaya. Air-connectivity will be provided to cities like Bhagalpur, Raxaul, East Champaran (for connectivity to Nepal) besides some other cities, including Ranchi (Jharkhand). Two Cessna Grand Caravan aircrafts (12-seater) have already been purchased for the purpose by Skyfisher Airways.
