Cidco fears Navi Mumbai international airport to become unviable due to delays, cost escalation

Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai international airport project affected persons (PAPs) and City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) are currently engaged in hard bargaining over the compensation in the wake of acquisition of 475 hectare from 10 villages. PAPs revealed that they have been told by Cidco to hurry up or else the airport project would either have to be wound up or be shifted to Chakan in Pune district or elsewhere in the state.
Both PAPs and Cidco officials admitted that there was no proposal in black and white in this regard. However, Cidco officials during their series of meetings with PAPs have told that the airport project would become unviable due to the cost escalation following prolonged delays.
According to Cidco's recent internal paper, the project cost, which was envisaged at Rs 4,766 crore way back in 1998 to handle 40 million passengers annually, has risen substantially to around Rs 14,573 crore as on date to handle 60 million passengers annually. The rise has been as high as 305.76%.
