New Delhi: The Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to examine the issue of bringing parity in the compensation provided to passengers of national and international flights in the event of a death or injury.
According to the existing guidelines, "the carrier shall be liable to pay not more than one lakh Special Drawing Rights (SDR) (Rs 83.96 lakh) for each passenger during international travel for damages sustained in case of death or bodily injury of a passenger upon condition only that the accident which caused the death or injury took place on board the aircraft or in the course of any of the operations of embarking and disembarking".
On the other hand, the compensation for domestic passengers is Rs 7.5 lakh in the event of death or an injury which results in a permanent disability for those above the age of 12 years, and Rs 3.75 lakh for those below the age of 12 years. In case of other injuries, the domestic airlines are liable to pay Rs 1.5 lakh or Rs 750 daily while the passenger undergoes treatment, whichever is less.
