Indian embassy criticises Haveeru for 'false and malicious' article

The Indian High Commission in Male Wednesday criticised Haveeru for a column published last week about the difficulties faced by Maldivians queuing up to obtain visa.
In a three-page statement, the high commission denied the contents of the “false and malicious” opinion piece written by Haveeru’s Managing Editor Ismail Naseer on June 5. Officials have been sacrificing their family life by working long hours and on weekends to facilitate visas despite being shouted upon and accused by visa applicants, it added.
The article, titled “Visa obtained in the heat,” details the difficulties in obtaining visa. It also contains eyewitness accounts of alleged mistreatment of applicants by high commission officials.
The statement said that India’s GMR, which won a controversial bid to run the Maldives only operational airport, was evicted “by spreading false and malicious propaganda” against the company.
The high commission alleged that some elements are trying to create schism in “our time-tested ties,” and reaffirmed its commitment to assist Maldives as a friendly country.
