Mumbai: Low-cost carrier IndiGo said on Monday that the government had allowed it to import 28 Airbus A320 aircraft in 2013 and 2014.
“IndiGo has been granted permission by the ministry of civil aviation to import 28 A320 aircraft in 2013 and 2014. The additional aircraft will enable IndiGo to take its low-fare and hassle-free service to more customers and enable stronger connectivity within India and abroad,” the company said.
This is the last lot of an order the airline had placed in 2005 for 100 A320 aircraft.
According to directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) data for April, IndiGo is the leader in the domestic market with a 29.8 per cent share.
“The new orders will start coming in 2016 after we are done with the first 100 aircraft we ordered from Airbus,” a company spokesperson told Financial Chronicle. In 2011, IndiGo placed an order worth $15 billion for an additional 180 aircraft, including 30 A320s. It is the first Indian airline to order a contract for 150 A320neo. The A320neo family is a series of enhanced versions of the A320 family developed by Airbus. ‘Neo’ stands for ‘New Engine Option’ and is the last step in the modernisation program A320 Enhanced (or A320E), started in 2006.
