Rain causes flight diversions, delays

Mumbai: Heavy rain forced flight diversions from the city on Tuesday afternoon. Flights were also delayed by 30 minutes on average at the city airport.
Nine incoming flights were diverted between 3 pm and 5 pm as very heavy rain caused visibility to fluctuate. Thunder clouds in the sky also made it impossible for flights to approach for a landing. As holding time in the skies increased, nine flights ran short of fuel and had to be diverted to other cities.
Airport officials said a Jet Airways flight from Jeddah was diverted to Jodhpur at 3 pm, a flight from Hyderabad went back, and a GoAir flight from Delhi was diverted to Ahemdabad. Three flights had to make a go-round as they found their landing approach "unstable".
