K S Purushan, former dean of the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (KUFOS) has expressed serious concerns about the implementation of the Sea Plane project in Kerala.
Speaking to the Express, the veteran fisheries expert said that the move “violates the spirit of the international conventions like Ramsar, which suggested a wise use of wetland areas”. Vembanad lake has been listed as a wetland of international importance, under the Ramsar Convention.
“Lakes like Vembanad and Ashtamudi are considered as our common heritage. It is against the interests of mankind to open the lakes for private profiteering,” Purushan said. According to him these lakes provide a conducive environment for the organisms including endemic fish.
“The unregulated private capital is already destroying the conducive environment. For several types of fishes, sea is the breeding ground. But lakes play a significant role by acting as the nursery for these fish. So it is crucial to ensure a conducive atmosphere for these species in the lakes”, he said.
