Steep airfares hit tourism arrivals to Kashmir

Srinagar: The steep hike in airfares is making Kashmir out-of-bounds for most of the tourists leaving stakeholders here wringing their hands.
Airfares from the other destinations— mostly that form main market for Kashmir tourism— to state’s summer capital have increased manifold during the last month, which is a major cause of worry for the local tourism stakeholders.
“The airfare on Delhi-Srinagar sector just two or three months ago was at Rs 4000, now it costs more than Rs 12,000 which is 300 per cent increase. Similar is the case with other sectors,” the tourism traders said.
“The steep airfare hike is affecting our business very badly and many tourists who were planning to visit Kashmir have been canceling their trip to the Valley,” said President, Travel Agents Society of Kashmir (TASK) , Ibrahim Siah.
“Recently a group of tourists cancelled their visit to Kashmir as they said that air tickets to Singapore, Malaysia are cheaper than this place,” Siah said.
Siah said “Throughout the year we promote the Kashmir tourism in all parts of world, so that we can attract more and more tourists. But arbitrary fare hikes by the carriers affect our prospective business opportunities.”
