Cargo piles up at Chennai airport

Chennai: Import cargo not cleared by the Customs is piling up at the Chennai airport cargo terminal due to a protest by a few department officials. They are aggrieved by the action of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against three of their colleagues.
Due to the protest, there is a backlog of around 3,000 documents and packages. “We have imported a critical component for a leading hospital. This is lying at the airport for the past five days. The hospital is putting enormous pressure on us to clear it, but we are helpless,” said an official of a leading Customs House agency, who did not want to be named.
Around 250 Customs officials, including Preventive Officers and Appraisal Officers, have been protesting from last week when the CBI took three of their colleagues for questioning in a case related to import of pharmaceutical drugs, the official said.
