In the making: Crack team to keep airport drug-free

Mumbai: Every morning at 5 am, Anthony, Anni, Amol, Arni and Vemo begin a gruelling training schedule at a government facility near Gwalior. Like any trainee cop, they acquaint themselves to different types of evidence and learn to corner a suspect.
More than 1,080 km away, in Mumbai, the five Labradors' performance is being closely followed by antinarcotics officials, who hope the dogs will help them tackle an alarming rise in drug smuggling.
In the past 15 months, drugs worth over Rs 100 crore have been seized by Mumbai airport authorities. In 2011-12, the figure was only Rs 20 lakh.
The spike suggests that Mumbai is quickly becoming the country's drug hub — a problem authorities are trying to confront by deploying more drug-busting canines.
