Smuggling flourishing at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport?

Ahmedabad: The arrests of a passenger and six staff members of an international airline and ground handling company in a gold smuggling case have raised serious concerns regarding security arrangements at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) had on Wednesday detained Mayur Puchhariya, with 3 kg gold and US$10,000 cash. Puchhariya had come from Sharjah in an Air Arabia flight.
“His modus operandi was unique. Upon arrival he used to hand over his bag to one of the ground handling staff members, who would meet him outside the terminal. The staff member had access to areas prohibited for passengers. After custom clearance, Puchhariya would take his bag back from the man,” said a top DRI official.
