Agartala: Spicejet hired a Russian Il-76 heavy-lift transport aircraft (Gajraj) on Wednesday to carry an engine to restore the Boeing flight that is stranded at Agartala airport for the last 5 days, aviation officials said.
The Mumbai-bound Boeing flight had made an emergency landing in Agartala on Saturday within 15 minutes after takeoff from the airport after an engine of the aircraft malfunctioned. At that time, the plane was in Bangladesh airspace.
Spicejet officials said Agartala airport does not have any scope of repairing the damaged engine and hence the aviation company procured the engine from the US. On Tuesday night, it reached New Delhi.
"To carry this engine weighing 5 MT, the company hired the Gajraj aircraft of the Indian Air force. It is expected that the engine with specialist engineers will arrive here in a day or two," an official said.
