Mumbai: When Satara resident M Bhanage wanted to book her flight tickets to Singapore, she called the call centre in Mumbai and was pleasantly surprised when the attendant at the centre answered her queries in Marathi.
Bhanage, a business dealer in agro products is part of the growing breed of upper middle class Indians who are educated in non-English medium schools and travel abroad frequently for business and leisure. “I feel more comfortable to communicate in my mother tongue — Marathi. It was such a treat when the call attendant at a foreign airline company spoke to me in Marathi,” says Bhanage.
In order to serve passengers from small towns, who may be not well-versed with English, foreign airlines are now increasingly hiring executives and crew members who can speak with passengers in their native tongue. Callers can get information on flight bookings, price quotes, computation of fares, package deals or offers, issue of e-tickets, website assistance, travel agent queries, frequent flyers programmes, etc in a language they are comfortable with.
