Air customs seize gold bars worth Rs 3.8cr at Chennai airport

Chennai:  In one of the biggest hauls at Chennai airport, the air customs intelligence officers seized 12kg of gold from three passengers early on Friday. Customs officials said the seizure was made after a raid on passengers who arrived on two flights from Dubai. They seized 12 gold bars with foreign markings, valued at Rs 3.79 crore.
Officials said they were alert about some passengers trying to smuggle in gold after the import duty was increased. "In one incident, six gold bars weighing 1kg each were recovered from Habeeb Rahiman Thankayathil, 47, a native of Kannur in Kerala. The man, who runs an advertising business in Dubai, had hidden the bars in false pockets," said the official.
In the second incident, passengers Medoth Muhammed Shafeeque and Vallikettummel Pakku Mohammed were arrested with six gold bars hidden in an elastic belt tied to their waist. They were arrested and remanded in custody.
