Bathinda airport unviable or caught up in political manoeuvring

Bathinda: Vote politics makes for bad economics. This can be true for the domestic airport here, which was announced with great fanfare by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal led SAD-BJP government. However, the airport has not become operational even after completed an year ago.
Bathinda, the fourth biggest town of Punjab might have made rapid progress economically and in infrastructure building with Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal family evincing keen interest in its rapid development but the domestic airport constructed in the vicinity of the town is lying idle for over a year now. The Airport, first in the interiors of Malwa region, is waiting for its inauguration and start of flights. Bur the civil aviation ministry, as per sources, is wary of its potential and viability in terms of revenue generation. If the state government reasons out the setting up of Rs 19,000 crore Hindustan petroleum-LN Mittal(HMEL) refinery, upcoming Rs 13,000 crore Vedanta Inc. power plant enough for traffic management but the ministry officials are not sure about the maintainability and regular traffic of passengers.
