Bird hit threat builds at Pune Airport

Pune: Over one hundred passengers on a Mumbai-Jaipur flight suffered a lucky escape when their plane landed safely seconds after being hit by a bird about 10 days ago. The impact was so huge that it rocked the plane from side to side, almost causing it to crash. Fortunately for those on board, the pilot managed to keep his wits, ensuring a safe landing.
At the Pune International Airport bird-plane collisions are a disaster waiting to happen. Rule 91 of the Aircraft Act 1937, framed especially to reduce bird hits, prohibits slaughtering of animals or throwing garbage in the open within a 10km radius of the airport’s reference point (the centre point of the airport). But that rule is seldom followed.
The Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA) reveals that incidents of bird hits has caused the aviation industry crores of rupees in losses. Not just in repairs, but also in terms of cancellation of flights. And while grandiose measures have been announced to curb the incidence of bird hits time and time again, little has
been done.
