If you forget your mobile phone at the Mumbai airport, there's every chance you will get it back, but at a price. The airport authorities have come up with a 'Lost & Found' rate card, which has 15 categories, and forgetful flyers will be charged according to the category in which their belongings fall, and the number of days the items remained in the airport safekeeping.
The items remain in airport safekeeping for a maximum period of 90 days, and in case of laptops, flyers are charged Rs 500 if they manage to collect them within a day, Rs 250 if collected within a week, and Rs 5,056 (Rs 4,500 for safekeeping plus 12.36 per cent service tax) for collection after day eight. On the other end, you will end up paying just Rs 300 even if you collect a forgotten pullover or a handbag after eight days.
Malad resident Gajanan Gokarn, for instance, was asked to pay Rs 5,056 to get back the iPad he had forgotten at the international airport's security gate. "After completing the paperwork, the officials at the Lost & Found Department told me I have to pay Rs 5,056 towards safekeeping charges. I had never heard of such charges, and refused to pay," said Gokarn, who had boarded a flight to Bangalore on July 25, and returned to Mumbai on August 8.
