New Delhi: The government is trying to promote air travel to Tier II and III cities and is likely to bring out a policy to ensure carriers operate on remote routes notwithstanding their commercial viability.
Aiming to push remote connectivity, the government has also identified 50 small towns and cities for new airports or modernise existing ones.
Speaking at an event organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, Civil Aviation Secretary KN Shrivastava said that a new ‘regional airline policy’ will be introduced.
India is currently the ninth largest aviation market handling 121 million domestic and 41 million international passengers annually. India’s civil aviation is touted to become the third largest market by 2020.
