Airport plans canine squad to sniff arms

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Patnaik airport will have dog squads from October.
Airport sources said there will be two squads comprising two sniffer dogs each.
The canines will be used in detection of explosives and arms.
"Since Bhubaneswar is a sensitive airport, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) asked us to deploy dog squads at the entry and exit points of the terminal. Of the four dogs, we have already procured two which are being trained at the Tekanpur dog training school, Gwalior. Their training will be completed on September 16," said senior manager (civil engineering) at the city airport U K Tiwari.
He said a Ranchi-based private firm had provided the dogs. The airport is spending Rs 69.5 lakh in the construction of a kennel. "Construction of the kennel on the Central Industrial Security Forces (CISF) campus is almost over," said airport director Sharad Kumar.
