Kondotty panchayat decries runway project

Malappuram:The Kondotty panchayat is all set to oppose the land acquisition process for the runway development of Karipur international airport.
The panchayat will pass a resolution against the government's move to acquire 20 acres for the project at a meeting on Tuesday. Prior to the meeting, panchayat president Fathima Beevi has also convened an all-party meeting on Sunday to discuss the issue.
Though the state government approved the special package for the runway development of the airport in December 2012, its works are yet to begin due to protests from locals. The government plans to acquire 87 acres for the runway. Of this, 20 acres will be from Kondotty panchayat, 50 acres from Nediyiruppu and 17 acres from Pallikal panchayat. Pallikkal and Nediyirippu panchayats have already informed the government that they will support public protest.
Fathima Beevi said the collector has already sought the panchayat's decision regarding the acquisition and a report regarding this has to be submitted by October 2.
