Rs 280 cr for Gannavaram airport

Hyderabad: In a strong indication of the Congress' resolve to go ahead with the division of Andhra Pradesh, the state cabinet on Friday decided to expand and improve infrastructure facilities at the Gannavaram airport near Vijayawada at a cost of Rs 280 crore.
The state government has decided to acquire 492 acres of land near the airport for which Rs 110 crore has been earmarked. Another Rs 170 crore would be spent on the construction of the airport terminal building, air traffic control tower and other infrastructure facilities that are required for a national-level airport. The government had entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Airports Authority of India for expansion of the airport in December 2007 but land acquisition problems delayed the project.
