CPI writes to PM Manmohan Singh, urges him not to privatise Air India and airports

New Delhi: The CPI has asked the prime minister not to give in to the pressure to privatise Air India (AI) as well the reported moves to hand over the Chennai and Kolkata airports to private parties.
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, CPI central secretariat member D Raja has alleged in his letter on Monday that there have been constant pressure from various private players to undermine Air India as well to corner the Airport Authority of India-run airports to maximize profits at the cost of the interest of the airline users. He has urged Singh to direct ministry of Civil Aviation to give up the reported plans on privatisation.
Blaming "faulty management policies" for the troubles of the AI, the CPI Rajya Sabha said, "we have seen how during the periods when Air India had been unable to operate sufficient number of flights, many private airlines levying predatory prices on the people and making huge profits. There is definite linkage between the health of Air India and the massive predatory profits made by private airlines". Therefore, Mr Raja added, "without the presence of Air India, the public will be totally exposed to the cartelisation by private airlines".
