Guwahati: Intellectuals and social organizations in the city came out in support of the employees of the LGBI Airport, Guwahati, and decided to resist the plans of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to privatize the only international airport in the northeast.
In a joint meeting of several organizations held in the presence of prominent citizens of Guwahati on Monday, eminent intellectual Hiren Gohain gave a clarion call to civil society groups of the state to build an intense movement along with people living in the vicinity of the airport to stop the Centre's bid to privatize the airport.
"Airports were built in the country with the objective of serving the public and to boost commercial activities. The immediate affect of privatizing the LGBI Airport will be a significant hike in the passenger charges for availing facilities at the airport, which we oppose," Gohain said.
He added that handing over the maintenance of the airport to a private firm will also make the lives of the workers at the airport insecure.
