4 held for smuggling in gold worth `1cr from Mauritius

Mumbai: Customs officers held four passengers including two women at the Mumbai international airport for allegedly smuggling in gold worth around `1 crore on Thursday night. Interestingly, the accused, arriving from Mauritius, had moulded the gold into belt buckles and kadas (a traditional bangle) to avoid detection. While the name of the accused is being withheld, investigators are now on the lookout for the person who was supposed to collect the contraband.
The passengers, who were holding a Mauritius passport, landed from flight MK 748 and were heading towards the green channel, which aroused suspicion of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers since the section is meant for fliers who do not have dutiable items to declare.
