AAI dumps garbage near Srinagar airport, risks flight safety

Srinagar: Airport Authority of India(AAI), which looks after airports in the country has been accused of dumping tons of garbage near the Srinagar International Airport –the  allegedly negligence –feared to cause bird strike, a deadly threat to flight safety vis-à-vis life and property of people.
 The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Monday said it has found some 400 metric tons of garbage dumped in the vicinity of Srinagar airport and accused the AAI of the offence.
 An official handout from the SMC said: “On a specific complaint that the Airport Authorities of India have been dumping solid waste and debris in a deep gorge falling between Indira Gandhi Airport Road and Police Headquarter at Humhama, the Chief Sanitation Officer, SMC along with the representatives of State Pollution Control Board conducted a joint  inspection of Humhama area.”
 “During inspection, it has been found that more than 400 metric tons of solid waste has been dumped on the slopes of deep gorge mostly consisting of non-biodegradable material.”
