New Delhi: They may be the most modern planes in India but Air India's Boeing-787 Dreamliners could be sitting blind on ground during the thick Delhi fog this winter. AI is yet to get approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to operate the Dreamliner using the category III instrument landing system (Cat III) that allows planes to land in thick fog.
While AI says it is confident of getting the nod for fog operations, it is also preparing a back-up plan under which the schedule of Dreamliners will be altered to operate in and out of Delhi in non-fog hours.
"AI does not have the approval yet for operating in Cat III conditions (when visibility is less than 100 metres). They are still working on it. We will decide on their Cat III status within a week. If the approval does not come, AI Dreamliners will have to operate in non-fog or clear weather conditions," said a DGCA official.
