New Delhi: State-run Air India will not ground any of its 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners that are awaiting a software upgrade by end of the month. The software upgrade for the entire fleet will be completed in a matter of 20 days, sources privy to the information said.
“The Dreamliner,” the official said, “like any other aircraft undergoes comprehensive checks after flying for a minimum number of hours, it is a system upgrade and is carried out on all makes and category of aircraft from time to time.”
Considered at least 20 per cent more fuel efficient for its carbon composite fuselage, the Dreamliners were inducted in the Air India fleet to speed up the turnaround plan of the state-run carrier that reported losses of `5,198.55 crore till March 31, 2013. Last year the airline had reported losses of Rs 7,559.74 crore.
The official said, “It will take two-days per aircraft for the proposed system upgrade, it is not a glitch that we are trying to rectify, it is like any other system upgrade. The entire operation will be seamless and none of our schedules will be disrupted.”
