Boost for diamond trade as AAI approves cargo on flights

Surat: Trains have been the conventional mode of transport for angadias to deliver precious diamonds from Surat to Mumbai and other destinations for last many years. This may soon be history as Airport Authority of India (AAI) has approved cargo services on passenger aircraft of SpiceJet from Surat. This would ensure that at least 30 per cent of diamond parcels are delivered in Mumbai in passenger cargo.
Around 30 courier boys employed with 12 angadia firms in the city carry diamonds worth over Rs 500 crore in the night trains namely Gujarat Mail and Saurashtra Express to Mumbai.
Though the courier boys are escorted by railway police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel in the trains and at the railway stations, the fear of attacks by robbers is always there.
If the angadias are to be believed then the joint raids by the income tax (I-T) department and National Investigation Agency (NIA) in July 2013 have forced the angadias to think of delivering the valuable diamonds through other mode of transports.
