Chandigarh airport to remain closed on two Sundays each month

Chandigarh: To carry out maintenance of its 20 year-old runaway, the Chandigarh Airport will remain closed to all flights after 1 pm on the first and third Sunday of every month. This is likely to continue till the airport gets a runway re-laid which, according to sources, is at least a year away.
Sources at the Air Force Station said the decision had been taken after a meeting with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in which it was pointed out that the runway was severely "damaged" and needed constant repair and maintenance to keep it operational. The choice was between shutting down the airport completely for over a month or carry out need-based repairs for which two Sundays have been set aside every month.
