500 fliers stranded as storm in Andaman grounds flights

Chennai: Several passengers who were hoping to make it to Port Blair had to make other plans, as all flights to the Andamans were cancelled owing to stormy weather.
Four flights from Chennai, operated by Air India, Go Air, Spicejet and Jet Airways, were cancelled and close to 500 passengers are waiting in the hope that they may be able to fly to Port Blair at least on Tuesday.  Similar situation prevailed at airports in Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar as well, when flights to the Veer Savarkar Airport were eventually cancelled.
As reported, a severe cyclonic storm with windspeeds exceeding 110 kmph, lashed the Andaman and Nicobar Islands through Sunday night. People were evacuated from low-lying coastal areas as a safety measure. Though the storm was expected to move towards the Indian coast by mid-Monday, stormy conditions and thundershowers remained for the most part of the day.
