Connecting The Dots

These days, the mobile phone universe is sharply divided between the smartphones and the feature (aka dumb) phones. Pretty soon, the universe of airports will also have a similar divide — between ‘intelligent’ airports and those that are, well, not so intelligent. While the former use technology smartly to reduce passenger stress — and improve profits, the not-so-intelligent airports fall behind.
Already, airports such as the ones in Munich, Copenhagen, Sydney, Oslo, Helsinki, among others, are deemed ‘more intelligent’ than others. And, in some cases, more intelligent is not only about how quiet and stress-free an airport feels but also all that you can do within it — if only you know how!
At the Copenhagen airport, for instance, passengers can use ‘indoor geolocation’ to plan their time inside the airport, or get information on shops, restaurants and other services. An app, which can be downloaded on one’s phone, displays all the services in the vicinity, how the desired boarding gate can be located, all by using the phone’s camera to scan immediate surroundings. At the facility, augmented reality makes the passengers’ flying experience stress-free and more pleasurable. Relevant and up-to-date information can be provided at the passenger’s exact location. In fact, the airport is now working with retailers to offer specific promotions to passengers, which will encourage more business.
