Gold worth nearly Rs 2 crore seized at airport over 2 days

Mumbai:The air intelligence unit (AIU) of the Customs department on Saturday arrested a flyer while he was attempting to smuggle in gold bars. The bars were found in the battery cavity of a small electric fan and an emergency light. More than 20 gold bars were recovered from the passenger. The gold bars weighed 2,552 gm and are valued at about Rs 70 lakh. This is the second case of smuggling at the city airport in the last two days in which gold worth nearly Rs 2 crore was seized.
On Saturday morning, Muhammed Rafeek Kunnapara landed at Mumbai airport from Dubai by an Emirates flight. His "suspicious behaviour" caught the eye of the AIU officials. "His body language looked suspicious and hence the officials kept an eye on his movements," said a senior official.
Kunnapara was intercepted after he crossed through the green channel.On checking his luggage, AIU officials found a small electrical table fan and an emergency light. Officials found 18 gold bars in the battery section of the fan and another four in the emergency light.
