Govt eyes divesting stake in Air India MRO subsidiary

New Delhi: Can the aviation ministry in the remaining five months of UPA-II roll out the process of divesting in Air India by making a start with the recently hived off maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) unit? According to highly placed sources, aviation minister Ajit Singh -- who has spoken about the inevitability of divesting AI by future governments -- is keen to get the process kicked off with the MRO unit.
The thinking comes as the Tata Group, which is launching a budget and a full service airline, is learnt to be keen on entering the MRO space. "The attempt is to ensure that at least a subsidiary of AI also gets funding and management expertise of the private sector. AI already has a highly skilled technical work force and by giving it the right push, it can get business from many airlines in India and also from this part of the world. This will also blunt criticism that UPA -II only took steps that helped private carriers. It will also allow us to test the waters in AI and see how the employees react to divestment," said sources.
