Mumbai: An ingenious smuggler from Sri Lanka almost managed to sneak in gold bars worth Rs 1 crore, which he had concealed inside the lavatory of the Dubai-Mumbai-Goa Air India flight AI984 that landed at the Mumbai International Airport at 4 am Thursday.
Officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Mumbai customs, who had a tip-off about the consignment, screened the passenger and his baggage but found nothing.
However, the alert cabin crew pointed to a flyer in the business class, Sri Lankan national, Mohideen Yaseer, 51, saying he spent most part of the Dubai-Mumbai journey in the lavatory.
