Mumbai main runway to be shut for 8 hours daily

Mumbai:  From Thursday, the main runway at the city airport will be shut for eight hours every day for about six months. After being deferred twice, the runway closure was finally sanctioned by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday evening.
The closure, which was to start first on October 28 and then on November 8, was postponed when the DGCA didn't clear the instrument landing system (ILS) on the secondary runway, which would hold the air traffic during closure.
From Thursday, the main runway will be shut from 9am to 5pm as the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL ) will construct two rapid exit taxiways. The first phase is likely to last till February and the second phase of construction would extend up to the first week of June, said officials. An MIAL spokesperson confirmed the closure.
The closure was to start from October 28 but was postponed to November 8. While MIAL claimed that the was ready, a delay in DGCA permission deferred it further.
