New system for taxis at airport puts paid to favouritism racket

Mumbai: With a new system being introduced for pre-paid taxis at the Mumbai airport, both passengers as well as cabbies are a relieved lot.
As per the new system bought about with help from the transport department, it has been made compulsory for the person manning the pre-paid counter to enter the licence plate number of the taxi on the passenger's receipt. With this, only the particular cabbie whose vehicle number has been entered will be entitled to ferry the passenger.
Earlier, the licence number of the taxi found no mention on the passenger's receipt, due to which favouritism prevailed and touts as well as cabbies close to those who operated the counters benefitted. They were frequently given long distance passengers, while other cabbies had to settle for low fare routes.
The racket also meant that only a certain number of taxis were being put to use, thereby resulting in delays for passengers besides other problems.
