Shoe scanners from Israel for airports

New Delhi: India is considering acquisition of shoe scanners from Israel for installation at Indian airports, even as an ambitious proposed plan to ask passengers to remove their shoes at airports has been put on hold, government sources have said. Sources said passengers would have been put to severe inconvenience had they been asked to remove their shoes at airports. They added countries in the developed world are themselves dropping the drill of asking passengers to remove their shoes and are instead looking at options such as shoe scanners.
Sources said the Indian aviation security establishment is now actively considering acquisition of shoe scanners from Israel that will check the footwear of passengers without their having to physically remove their shoes.
As per the original proposed plan, passengers were to be asked to remove their shoes and place them in trays following which the shoes would be scanned to detect any concealment of an explosive device inside.
