Smuggling picks up in Trichy airport

Trichy: The airport here may not be drawing a large number of travellers as larger ones in metros, but it is witnessing a steady rise in smuggling cases. The regular seizure of contraband items, including drugs, of late points to a spurt in smuggling through the airport which serves the central districts of the state.
Senior officials from the customs department said gold smuggling is showing a steady rise after the government imposed severe restrictions on the import of gold.
Since March this year, at least five incidents of drug seizures were reported from the airport. Interestingly, most passengers caught with drugs were either proceeding to or coming from Malaysia, the officials said. A 25-year-old man was arrested at the airport on Sunday for possessing 1.75 kg of amphetamine, a psychotropic drug.
