Chandigarh: It's not only the ineffective Instrument Landing System (ILS), a navigation aid required for safe landing of aircraft, that is causing cancellation of flights. For, smog caused by paddy stubble burning around city airport area too is grounding flights by reducing visibility.
On Thursday, three flights were cancelled after 4pm and one delayed by a few hours because of poor visibility at the airport. The flights that were cancelled were scheduled for Chandigarh-Delhi-Bengaluru, Chandigarh-Jaipur-Ahmedabad and Chandigarh-Bhopal.
Director of Chandigarh airport Captain H S Toor said, "The weather was misty on Thursday. But burning of paddy straw by farmers of nearby areas of Punjab further reduced the visibility at the airport."
