Tow-truck smashes aerobridge

Chennai: An aerobridge that passengers had just used to board a plane, was badly damaged after an aircraft-towing tractor smashed into it. The incident caused a few tense moments at the city airport on Wednesday, as two ground handlers were injured in the accident.
According to airport sources, passengers had just used aerobridge number 26 to board a SpiceJet flight. It was scheduled to depart within 20 minutes to Delhi, so ground handlers worked quickly to get passengers boarded and closed the plane’s doors before 5 pm. “They may have been in a hurry. They closed the doors very quickly and asked the aerobridge operators to retract it immediately,” said the source.
Aerobridges are devices that allow passengers to board and deplane from aircraft, without having to climb on to the tarmac. They are fixed on one end, while the other end can be swivelled, moved, retracted and attached to aircraft of various sizes. The movement is facilitated by a ‘cab’ at the front which has two wheels and an operator inside it.
