Mangalore: It's a gold rush at the Mangalore International Airport (MIA). The customs department's revenue which was just Rs 14.17 lakh last fiscal, has shot up to Rs 3.54 crore this fiscal in just 12 days.
The main reason is the increase in 24 carat gold bars coming in through the airport. In the past 12 days, 132kgs of gold bars came into the country. While the customs cleared 23 bars weighing 1kg each on Wednesday morning, the department cleared 17 on Tuesday and 23 on Monday. This trend started on November 23.
Sources said the gold bars were coming through a legal route since the customs had plugged in all the avenues of smuggling the yellow metal and cite the seizure of 11kg of gold valued at Rs 3.6 crore in the past few months.
