Bangalore: The swanky new Terminal 1A at Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) is expected to handle up to 2 crore passengers a year, almost double the present 1.14 crore.
Chief minister will on Saturday throw open T1A and also announce BIA's new name -- Nadaprabhu Kempegowda International Airport (NKIA), after the founding father of Bangalore.
With this expansion, the airport will be able to earn huge revenue from passengers. Infrastructure development minister SR Patil told reporters on Friday the survey conducted by the National Council of Applied Economic Research has estimated that the average income to the state from every passenger is about Rs 11,500. "Taking this as a base, the state is expected to earn Rs 23,000 crore a year from 2 crore passengers," he said.
With the commissioning of the additional terminal, BIA is poised to overtake Chennai International Airport as the third largest airport in the country, while Delhi stands first and Mumbai second.
