One month into job, lab sniffs out drugs worth Rs 3.2 crore

Mumbai: Aniy, one of the two Labradors inducted into the customs department following the demise of its star canine Dolly in April, has hit the ground running. At 4:30 am on Monday, one-and-a-half-year-old Aniy, who has been on the job for just a month, sniffed out a Ketamine consignment worth Rs 3.20 crore that was carefully concealed in folds of crochet yarn in a passenger's luggage at Mumbai international airport.
The neophyte, fresh from her training at the Border Security Force centre at Tekhanpur, Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh turned wildly enthusiastic when she got a whiff of the consignment. She dragged her handler to South African passport holder Thalitha Mosiga Potgieter, who was departing by Ethiopian Airlines ET- 611 to Addis Ababa, with such force that he fell down.
"The passenger was coming in from Delhi and headed to Addis Ababa . Potgieter, who was taken by surprise as Aniy charged towards her, later admitted to her crime. "She said she was aware of the contraband in her baggage. The drugs were in raw form. Further processing would have made them more potent," Karlapu said.
