Spurt in smuggling through Madurai airport

Madurai: With the steady increase in the number of international flights from Madurai, there is a spurt in incidents of smuggling through the airport.
Barely 10 days after a 15-year-old boy from Colombo was caught while attempting to sneak in with 290 gm of gold bars, customs officials seized 1,189 gm of gold from three people, including two women, from Sri Lanka on Friday evening. This is the third incident of smuggling in December and fourth in the last two months.
"We are aware of the situation. There has been quite a few incidents of smuggling this month. But the fact that we have thwarted all these smuggling attempts is an indication that we are equipped to handle such situation,'' said a customs official.
