2 gold carriers held at Kolkata airport

Kolkata: The arrest of two gold carriers at Kolkata airport on Wednesday has led central intelligence agencies to believe that smugglers have changed the modus operandi of sneaking gold into India. Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) say the ringleaders are getting "lowly-paid" Indians in southeast and Arabian countries to agree to carry gold in to India. "Instead of depending on an expert carrier, these persons are asked to carry small amounts of gold to various destinations in India. While gold from Dubai enters airports like Mumbai and Kozhikode, carriers from Southeast Asia, especially Bangkok, target airports in Kolkata and Chennai. The entire smuggled booty is then assembled through 'contacts'," said a top source.
